The Passportes du Soleil Mountain Bike Race

The Passportes du Soleil is an epic mountain bike race in the huge Portes du Soleil region of France & Switzerland which heralds the start of summer and the opening of the lift system. It takes place over the last weekend in June, and has evolved from an earlier event known as the "Freeraid".

Most riders don't really treat the Passportes as a race (although you do get a number for the front of your bike) but simply a great day's mountain bike riding. The event is massive - 2 days, 3 courses (30, 45 & 75 km) and 3700 riders. The classic trek of 75 km includes 12 ski lifts, 6500 m of total downhill, 500 m of total uphill climb.

What makes this event unique is the fact that it attracts a wide range of participants - from lycra clad cross country riders to armour clad downhill riders, and from beginners to experts. Everyone gets involved and rides the same course. True, the cross country riders tend to beat the downhill riders on the climbs, and for the real keen peddlers, there is also optional climbing sections. And true the downhillers tend to overtake the cross country riders when it comes to descending, and there are a couple of optional "free ride" sections. But overall, the race is a fantastic melting pot of all mountain bike styles and standards.

As for the course itself - it has to be one of the best in the world! It takes in some amazing panoramas on the Morgins and Champoussin sections with views of the Dents du Midi, the Dents Blanch and even Mont Blanc. There is some excellent steep and twisty single track down through the woods in Torgon. There are dedicated downhill courses used at Chatel and Les Gets. There is an epic descent from the top of Linderets down to Morzine and there are some great meandering cross-country sections on relatively easy 4x4 tracks.

Another excellent feature of this event are the fantastic refreshment stands located at regular intervals throughout the course. Large tables offer up a wide range of snacks and drinks, from energy/nut bars to cheese and ham, from energy drinks to beer and wine. It is always interesting to see who feels fit to tuck into the alcoholic drinks at ten in the morning, and then avoid them if you see them on the course!

The Passporte du Soleil is really an event for everyone. It has become so massive that it now sells out months in advance. However, if you visit the Portes du Soleil later on in the summer, it is possible to get a map from the local tourist office and cycle pretty much the whole route.

Race stats:

mountain bike – Mountain Bikes – Gateway to a New Adventure!

New HD Mountain Bike Film

The sport of mountain biking has over the last 20 years, developed into one that is both competitive and shows endurance of the riders. Mountain biking started in the 1970s when riders started taking their bicycles off road and onto more rugged terrain. During these early years anyone wishing to do mountain biking had to customize their own bikes to make them more sturdy for the rougher ride.

Some of the first men's mountain bike races involved the riders taking their bikes up hills and mountains and then racing them down the descent. The bicycles at the time were not equipped to deal with the speed that was gained on these descents or the surfaces that the mountain bikers rode on. During these early years breaks would over heat and the frames and suspensions could not stand up to the pressure of the mountain bike ride. Because of this mountain bikers began working on their own mountain bikes to make them capable for the sport and various mountain bike parts became available on the market along with specialized bikes for mountain biking.

So what makes a good mountain bike? Mountain bikes of the present, and in particular men's mountain bikes, have to be sturdy for this rugged sport. The frames of mountain bikes are heavier than that of a normal street bike and the mountain bike suspension is more durable. The mountain bikes have a double suspension shock absorber that cushions the jolts and vibrations from the rough mountain rides.

A huge range of unique modern designs of these bikes is easily availably from a sports shop or big shopping malls. Usually the design and shape of these bikes are manufactured according to the requirements of people. There is a huge variety of these bikes and all of them have a good quality and too much reliable for any kind of road trip. Before purchasing a bike it is recommended that you must know the ways and techniques to buy a reliable bike.

The most common models of these mountain bikes are All Mountain, Cross Country, Trail Bikes, Free Ride and many more. These bikes are categorized for different purposes, some of them are very good at roads, some are best on mountains and some of them are only to ride on sand. It is a good idea to consult an expert of bikes before going to buy it on your own.

Remember that cost is not everything and that you need to make sure that you get the most for your dollar, but do not skimp when purchasing a fork as an extra can be the difference between a very comfortable ride for your writing style or a wasted investment

mountain biking : How to make your bike run better

once in a while, I look at professional bike riders in magazines or on television and ask myself: "how do they make their work so well?" - Mostly, the differences between professional bikes and serious biker's mountain bikes are not so substantial. The answer I am told when asked, and is also the answer which I believe is true - it's not only what bike you have - what really matters is what you do with it. A good bike provides its rider good performances if the bike is fitted to the rider's dimensions and needs and takes good care of the bike. It's not enough to own a state of the art mountain bike. If you don't take care of it properly, even a pro bike will deteriorate as well and will provide you with only mediocre performances.

Here are some useful tips given to me by professional mountain bike riders on keeping good technical care of your bike:

- Keep your chain lubricated. A lubricated chain will allow you to have a smoother bike ride.

- Replace your chain between 2-3 times a year (depends how much you ride regularly).

- Check all nuts and bolts after rides. Loose nuts or bolts can move important handles and leavers, which if taken out of their fitted position will lower the quality of your bike ride.

- Make sure you ride with the proper air pressure in your tires. When riding in harder terrain, it is recommended to lower air pressure on your bike.

One of the advantages of taking a biking vacation, and to Morzine especially is that you can learn a lot of important information on keeping up your bike from peer bikers and instructors. We're expecting to see you in Morzine this summer!

Enjoy Mountain Biking in Breckenridge

The town of Breckenridge is named by USA Today as one of the top ten places to take kids on a bike. Cruising on Colorado’s mountain trails on a seat of a bike gives you first class tickets to glorious mountain views of the aspen trees, wildflowers and occasional mountain wildlife. Mountain biking is one of the best ways for you to enjoy the outdoors but also take off a few pounds. Breckenridge is continuously working on improving its already word-class recreational environment. So it’s not just the best place to take your kids, it is also the best place for you and your friends to explore on the seat of a bike.

Biking involves little planning and preparation as compared to other sports, but before you take your bike out there are a few tips you need to consider before going biking for the day.

Trails that are short don’t necessarily mean they’re easy. Factors such as length and elevation gain should always be considered as well as technical difficulty. Before choosing a trail, ask mountain bikers who are very familiar with the area to recommend trails that would be perfect for your skill level and also consider trails that you would like to be a little challenging, a little challenge never hurts anybody in fact in this sport it is highly recommended. Remember that taking new and unfamiliar trails should be taken with care and caution. Trails in the Summit Country are interconnected and requires range in skill level. But pushing yourself too much can never be good at the end, so don’t be embarrassed if once in a while you get off your bike and walk the rest of the route, you might be sparring yourself from scary situations up ahead.

Make you have protective gear on all the time, precautionary steps are a must do in ensuring you stay protected and safe all the time. The risk of injury is inherent in the sport of mountain biking, especially in the more extreme disciplines such as downhill biking. Therefore protective equipment is a must for every mountain biker. It can protect the rider against minor injuries, and reduce the extent or seriousness of major impacts. Helmets are not only considered as protective gear but is also a life saving device if you get into an accident. They’re usually well ventilated and lightweight so you wont even know that its there, make sure it is strapped snuggly. Biking could get more difficult when you have to reach and stretch farther for the pedals or handles, so you should consider that when you’re renting or borrowing from a friend. Make sure the parts can be adjusted to your specific needs.

Mountain trails can get very busy just like traffic on the roads. Mountain trails are open to other nature enthusiasts like hikers, nature photographers, and people going to their picnic destination or even horseback riders. A good courtesy to avoid collision and accidents is to call out your presence. Always remember to slow down when you’re turning on a blind corner. Make sure you’re not scaring the horses though, show consideration by dismounting your bike and taking a few steps downhill before getting on it again.

Colorado is home to many outdoor sports, but biking particularly have a special place. They’re host to state-wide races, bike festivals and longer and more interesting bike trails. Breckenridge in particular has one of the more exciting trails, so whether you’re a beginner or a professional, or even just a passing fancy at the moment you will never be disappointed in Breckenridge.

Mountain Bikes – Cycling through the Rough

If you want to get into a fun sport that will allow you to get plenty of exercise, get into shape, and offer you challenges that you won't find elsewhere - all while enjoying an abundance of nature - you might want to start thinking about mountain bikes. Mountain biking is a popular sport that has been around for numerous years, but recently, with the new technology that goes into the manufacturing of today's mountain bikes, there seems to be a new interest in this sport.

If the sport of mountain biking isn't something that you know a lot about, you may have the wrong idea about the sport. You've seen the mountain bikers on the television sports channels jumping obstacles and racing down dirt trails - and racing is one aspect of mountain biking. However, racing is not required. In fact, most mountain bikers don't race at all.

Mountain biking for most people can be compared to hiking. The point is to get out, get exercise, and experience nature. Yes, there will be obstacles to maneuver around on them more advanced trails, but many people are just out for the pleasure of riding in nature - just like hikers are out to enjoy the walk and the nature. Some mountain bikers are leisurely riders. Some like the challenges that they face out on the trails - but they aren't in any hurry. Other's like both the challenges and the racing! The path you choose is up to you.

With this new light on the sport of mountain biking, you may now be interested in getting involved in this sport. Maybe you want to lose weight. Maybe you just want to get more exercise. Then again, maybe you like the thought of enjoying nature, but you aren't big on walking, and prefer to ride. No matter what your reasons for your interest are, you will definitely need a mountain bike - finding a place to ride it is the easy part.

As a beginner, you really won't have any idea what you need in the way of a mountain bike. Therefore, it is in your best interest to buy a very basic, yet sturdy, mountain bike that can be upgraded at a later date. Visit your local bike dealer, and talk to them. Let them know that you are just starting out, and that you want a basic bike that you can upgrade later. If they try to sell you something expensive - more than $500 - walk away and visit a different store.

You might also consider purchasing a used bike from a private individual. Used bikes can be found online, through the printed classifieds, and even through bike dealers. Look around your area - and online - to see what is available.

Before making a purchase, it is always a good idea to talk to other mountain bikers. Ask them what bike they started with, and what they would suggest for you. The best information you will find will come from the people who are already deeply into the sport.

Once you've made a purchase, you need to find a place to ride. Are there any state parks or national forests in your area? Are there wooded areas that aren't fenced off? These are ideal places to ride. However, you should never ride on private property without permission. If you can't think of any place that might have bike trails, do a little research online. Type in ‘bike trails in Alabama' or ‘mountain bike trails in Georgia' or whatever state you live in into the search box of any search engine, and you will find quite a bit of information!

Look for sites that offer reviews of bike trails that you want to visit. These reviews will save you a lot of time, and help you avoid the trails that either aren't worth your time, or aren't suited to your skill level. Reading is actually a big part of mountain biking if you are a beginner! You should also consider purchasing a few mountain bikes videos. These videos will help you learn the basics before you set off on a trail!
